Performa's Lust Weekend/ Lisa Kirk's demonstration, curated by Tairone Bastien
Lower East Side November 7th and 8th
demonstration a project commisioned for the 2009 Performa Biennial
The Lust Weekend: Inspired by Valentine de-Saint Point lisa kirk 2009 "For heroes, for those who create with the spirit, for dominators of all fields, lust is the magnificent exaltation of their strength. For every being it is a motive to surpass oneself with the simple aim of self-[INVALID]ion, of being noticed, chosen, pick(et)ed out." Inspired by Valentine de Saint-Point ;this project considers the legacy of the parks namesake William Henry Seward (1801-1872), an American statesman, as senator from New York (1849-1861), Seward was an outspoken critic of slavery. However, in this case, his namesake shall celebrate the public's slavery to their own desires. "demonstration" will take place both online and be performed in the streets of the lower east side, concluding in at Sewart Park where ;there is a center oval with a marble mosaic map of the Lower East Side neighborhood. This project is entirely inclusive, it is meant to suggest that anyone who would like to participate may. Therefore all participants become part of the artwork and the Performa biennial. In the spirit of the democratic act of a demonstration, ANY person who submits a picket sign to be posted on the project web site and ANY person who chooses to print a slogan from that website will be given specific directions as to how to participate in the performance. Participants in "demonstration" will follow the depicted path in the mosaics spiral through the neighborhood - marching through the streets of Lower East Side and finally reaching the center mosaic circle. At our meeting point I would like for everyone to discard of their picket signs into a large pile and walk away in the direction from which they came leaving nothing but a pile of statements, perversions, outings, admissions. Directions for demonstration 1.Fill in the blank "I am a______" (Choose a statement that relates to the context of this particular project "I am a cheater", "I am a cock sucker", I am a______) 2.submit your statement to me@lisakirkprojects.com (Your submission will automatically be posted for the public to access and print) 3. When you visit the demonstration website to print a statement you will be given instructions as to how make a picket sign and directions to participate as performer in "demonstration".
