Stampede

Stampede (India), 2008, color study for billboard.

I AM the people—the mob—the crowd—the mass. -Carl Sandburg

A stampede at the annual pilgrimage in Mecca killed 345 people today, the Interior Ministry said, the deadliest such event since 1990. -New York Times, Jan 12, 2006

STAMPEDE!

This new project will consist of three elements:

OBJECT: A series of black and white photographic prints of stampede imagery (to see images scroll down page). Some of these have already been created and shown, they are the first incarnation of this project.

PUBLIC: A second version of these images will be displayed as color billboards throughout New York City.

INSTALLATION: The exhibition version will also manifest as an interactive sculptural experience. As one enters a (TBD) space, the viewer would trigger three elements. First, the sound of a stampede (human, animal or combination) would move towards the viewer, approaching from a distance via surround sound. Simultaneously, shadow projections of crowds and running animals would move from within the space along the walls towards the participant. As this is going on, a third element consisting of a whirlwind of enclosed dust is activated in the center of the space, as if being kicked up by a herd of animals/people. (This dust is enclosed within a glass vitrine environment). Each cycle would take approx 2 minutes.

SAMPLE: stampede sound clips

http://www.sounddogs.com/previews/104/mp3/546226_SOUNDDOGS_Cr.mp3

http://www.sounddogs.com/previews/25/mp3/327735_SOUNDDOGS_Ho.mp3

*My intention with this work is to create a visual and synesthetic experience of a stampede. Whether it's a pack of herd animals or a crowd of scared people at a soccer stadium, religious ceremony, or Christmas shopping, a stampede is a lethal and chaotic event. Like a tornado or tsunami, a stampede will destroy anything in its way if it is not stopped. This project is projected for completion by Spring 09, provided that the budget of 5k is obtained through grants and/or private donations. To view my CV, please click the tab at top of this page.
